Fountain Maintenance and Care | Daily Operations, Water Quality Management, and Troubleshooting

Fountains usually look beautiful in their first year after installation, but the third year is the real turning point. In most cases where a fountain stops working, the problem isn’t that the equipment itself has broken down, but rather that no one has been changing the water regularly, cleaning the filter screens, or noticing that a light bulb should have been replaced long ago. Maintenance isn’t just a cost center; it determines whether this water feature will continue to thrive—this page provides a schedule and troubleshooting guide that you can follow step by step.

Maintenance Schedule Organized by Frequency

FrequencyWhat to DoNote
DailyVisual inspections, removal of debris from the water surface, and monitoring of water levelsCheck once before and once after starting the machine: listen for any unusual noises, ensure the water pattern is complete, and look for any signs of water leakage. Abnormal water levels are often the earliest indication of a problem.
Every weekClean the filter screen and check the nozzles for clogsA clogged filter screen can cause a drop in water flow and increase the load on the pump. A clogged spray head can distort the water pattern; if detected early, it can be cleared using a small tool.
MonthlyWater Quality Testing and Treatment, Electrical Panel InspectionTest the pH, turbidity, and algae levels, and add chemicals as needed. Inspect the electrical cabinet for water ingress, condensation, unusual odors, and loose terminals.
Every seasonInspection of Pumps and Valves; Checking the Condition of Lighting FixturesCheck the water pump seals and operating current, and inspect each light individually to identify any that are burned out or have color shifts. Replacing them all at once saves on labor compared to replacing them one by one.
Every yearDrain and clean the tank; perform a comprehensive inspection of the control systemDrain and clean the bottom and walls of the tank, and inspect the waterproofing. Perform a comprehensive test of the control system and back up the programs.

Water Quality Management

Recirculating filtration is the foundation

A well-designed circulation system can reduce water quality issues by more than half. The key lies in proper flow rate matching and regular cleaning of the filter media—many projects with ”poor water quality” actually stem from filter screens that haven’t been cleaned in six months.

Algae Control

Common problems with outdoor water features. These issues require a comprehensive approach that combines shade, nutrient control, and appropriate chemical treatment; relying solely on chemical treatment is unlikely to resolve them completely.

Change the water regularly

A recirculating filtration system does not mean you never have to change the water. Schedule water changes based on usage intensity and environmental conditions, and clean the bottom and sides of the tank while changing the water.

Water Type and Water Quality Influence Each Other

For water features such as the "Glistening Spring" and "Digital Water Curtain," which require highly precise water jet patterns, poor water quality will directly affect their visual appeal. High-precision water features require a more effective filtration system.

Common Problems and Solutions

PhenomenonPossible CausesApproach
Insufficient water levelClogged filter screen / Clogged nozzle / Worn pump impeller / Leaking pipesFirst, clean the filter screen and spray nozzles; then, check the operating current and the piping for leaks; finally, consider repairing the pump.
Some sprinkler heads are not spraying waterNozzle clogged / Valve not open / Blockage in this branch lineRemove the spray head for cleaning, and inspect the corresponding branch valve and piping. In most cases, the blockage is caused by foreign objects.
The pump is getting louderBearing Wear / Air Ingress / Loose Mounting / CavitationFirst, check the mounting and water supply conditions (whether the water level is too low), and then determine whether the pump needs to be repaired.
The underwater light isn't workingDamaged light fixture / Water ingress at the connector / Power supply failureFirst, check the control circuit and the drive power supply; then inspect the light fixture. When replacing the fixture, check that the waterproof connector is intact.
There is a noticeable difference in the color of the lightsLighting Fixtures from Different Batches / Single-Lamp AgingDetermine whether this is a batch issue, and replace all units from the same batch at once to ensure consistency.
Control Program FreezeProgram Error / Communication Interruption / Hardware FailureFirst, restart the system and restore the backup program, check the communication lines, and then troubleshoot the controller hardware.
The water level continues to dropPool Leaks / Poor Water Return / Excessive EvaporationFirst, rule out any issues with the return water system, then let it sit for a while to determine if there is a leak. Any leaks should be addressed as soon as possible.
Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker TrippedMoisture in the wiring / Decreased equipment insulationImmediately shut down the system, disconnect the power supply, and troubleshoot the issue; do not force a reset or restore power. Electrical issues must be handled by a qualified professional.

Wear Parts and Replacement Intervals

ComponentsReplacement Interval GuidelinesFailure Behavior
Underwater LED Lights2–5 yearsDoes not light up, dims, has color distortion, or has water damage causing fogging.
Mechanical Seals for Pumps1–3 yearsLeaks, increased noise, and reduced flow.
Nozzle3–8 yearsBlockages and wear cause deformation of the water-filled components, and the service life of stainless steel parts is shortened in corrosive environments.
Filter MediaSeveral months – 2 yearsThe pressure differential has increased, and the effluent is cloudy.
Valves and Flexible Connectors3–6 yearsLeaks, stiff switches, and aged rubber.
Control Module5–10 yearsCommunication interruption, program error, output failure.

The service life is a reference value based on normal operating conditions; actual service life is affected by operating duration, water quality, and environmental conditions. We recommend keeping a stock of wear-and-tear parts as listed.

Operations and Maintenance Characteristics in Different Scenarios

SceneMaintenance EntityFeatures
City SquareMunicipal or Third-Party Property ManagementThe equipment is subject to heavy use and frequent accidental damage. Maintenance procedures should be designed so that they can be performed by non-specialists, and spare parts should be readily available.
Retail ComplexShopping Center Engineering DepartmentOperations cannot be suspended for maintenance, and operating hours are limited. For indoor projects, special attention should be paid to moisture prevention and electrical inspections.
HotelHotel Engineering DepartmentStrict requirements for noise levels and visual appeal; maintenance must be scheduled outside of passenger service hours. Equipment reliability takes priority over feature richness.
Cultural and Tourism AttractionsScenic Area OperatorDuring peak season, continuous operation is required, and performance reliability is critical. We recommend implementing redundancy and maintaining a stock of spare parts to prevent performance cancellations during peak season.
Residential Real EstateProperty Management CompanyMaintenance budgets are limited, and there is a shortage of specialized personnel. From the selection phase onward, ”affordability for the property management company” must be treated as a hard constraint.
Villa GardenMaintenance by the Property OwnerAlthough small in size but located nearby, noise and water stains are the issues most easily noticed. The design should make it easy to maintain on your own.

Winter Storage and Long-Term Inactivity

Emptying is the key

In cold regions, it is essential to drain the piping and pump housing before winter. The pipe slope and drain outlets must be planned during the design phase, as retrofitting them later is very troublesome.

Protection of Underwater Equipment

For bodies of water that cannot be drained, take measures to provide heat tracing, or remove and store portable equipment.

Have it serviced before taking it out of service

Drain, clean, disconnect power, and apply rust-proofing and protective treatments. If you don’t perform maintenance before taking the equipment out of service, problems will arise all at once when you start it up again next year.

Reactivation requires verification

After a prolonged period of inactivity, when restarting the equipment, check the electrical insulation, seals, and piping item by item; confirm that there are no abnormalities before operating at full capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the maintenance costs high?

These costs primarily consist of electricity, water, chemicals, labor, and the replacement of wear-and-tear parts. Operating hours are the largest variable—for projects that operate year-round, the cumulative operating costs over several years may approach the initial equipment investment. When selecting equipment, it is more reliable to base estimates on the projected number of operating hours.

Can the property management company handle the maintenance on its own?

Routine inspections, removing debris, cleaning filters, and simple unclogging are all acceptable. Work involving electrical systems, pump maintenance, and control systems should be handled by qualified professionals. Upon delivery, we will provide a maintenance manual and training, and offer recommendations based on the maintenance team’s capabilities.

How often should I change the water?

This depends on the intensity of use, the environment, and the condition of the water treatment system. Facilities with good circulation and filtration can go longer between water changes, while those in open-air environments with a lot of falling leaves will need more frequent changes. Base the decision on water quality test results rather than a fixed number of days.

What should I do if the water turns green?

Algal growth is a common problem in outdoor water features. First, check to see if the circulation and filtration systems are operating normally and if the filter screens are clogged. Then, treat the algae and consider implementing shade measures. Simply adding chemicals will only suppress the problem in the short term.

If a few lights are burned out, do I have to replace them all?

You don’t need to replace them all, but be mindful of color differences. When light fixtures from different batches or with varying degrees of aging are placed side by side, the color differences are very noticeable; if this affects your visual experience, we recommend replacing them in groups.

Can you provide long-term maintenance services?

Yes. We provide maintenance manuals and training, as well as a long-term supply of replacement parts. We can also offer periodic inspections or managed maintenance services as needed. For overseas projects, our services primarily consist of supplying replacement parts and providing remote guidance.

What should I do if the ground fault circuit interrupter trips frequently?

Shut down the system immediately and disconnect the power; do not repeatedly force a reset. Such situations are often caused by moisture in the wiring or a decline in the equipment’s insulation; a professional must inspect each circuit individually and confirm that the insulation has been restored before the system is put back into service.

I want to get the old fountain working again. Where do I start?

First, conduct a comprehensive assessment: electrical insulation and grounding, pool waterproofing, the condition of the piping, and the degree of equipment deterioration. In most cases, the system can be restored simply by replacing the lights, seals, and control system; the pool structure and main piping can often be retained.
