Why Can't the Water from Square Fountains Be Drunk Directly?

There is a fundamental difference between fountain water and tap water or drinking water: fountain water is recycled water, not domestic water treated at a water treatment plant.

Even if tap water is initially used, the following contaminants will continue to accumulate in the fountain water as it circulates:

  • Biological Contamination:Algae and bacteria (including Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) multiply rapidly in open water bodies; particularly in the summer, when water temperatures exceed 25°C, the bacterial doubling time can be as short as 20–30 minutes.
  • Chemical Pollution:Heavy metals and organic pollutants from atmospheric deposition, bird droppings, decomposition products from fallen leaves, and litter discarded by visitors continuously introduce pollution loads into the water bodies.
  • Disinfection Byproducts:Chlorine disinfectant added to maintain water quality reacts with organic compounds in the water to form disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMs). These substances are toxic to humans and are not suitable for drinking.
  • Heavy Metal Leaching:Over time, as water circulates through copper nozzles and stainless steel pipes, trace amounts of metal ions may leach out; once these accumulate to certain concentrations, the water is no longer suitable for drinking.

Even if the water appears clear and odorless, the aforementioned contaminants are still present, and it is impossible to determine whether the water in a fountain is safe just by looking at it.

Type 1: Landscape Ponds and Fountains (Traditional, with a Pond Basin)

These types of fountains have visible reservoirs with a large volume of water; the entire water volume is typically filtered once every 4–8 hours. Dry fountains have no visible pool, and the nozzles are flush with the ground, allowing children to play directly in the spray area. Because people come into direct contact with the water in these fountains, the water quality standards must be the strictest and should be based on swimming pool water quality standards.

Actual implementation varies widely. At some well-managed dry fountains, the water quality is close to swimming pool standards, posing a low risk to children during brief exposure; however, at some poorly managed dry fountains, the water has not been disinfected for long periods, resulting in extremely high bacterial concentrations, and it is not uncommon for children to experience skin irritation or red, swollen eyes after playing there.

Type 3: Mist Fountain (Ultrasonic Mist Generator)

Mist fountains do not produce water jets, but rather an ultrafine water mist with a droplet diameter of 3–5 micrometers; particles within this size range can penetrate deep into the human respiratory tract. If the water used to create the mist is not adequately disinfected, Legionella bacteria in the water can be inhaled along with the mist, causing Legionnaires' disease.

Dry fountains are the type of fountain children encounter most often in the summer; the following points offer practical guidance:

  • Monitoring Water Quality:If the water from the fountain has an unusual odor, appears yellowish or greenish, or if there is visible algae growing on the ground, this indicates that water quality maintenance is clearly inadequate; it is recommended that you avoid contact with it.
  • Avoid swallowing:Even if the water quality of a properly maintained dry fountain meets contact standards, it is not safe to drink. Please remind children not to catch fountain water in their mouths.
  • Avoid contact if the skin is broken:If you have a wound, eczema, or broken skin, contact with fountain water can significantly increase your risk of infection.

  • Recirculating Filtration:The entire volume of water circulates through the filtration system once every 4–8 hours, removing particulate matter and some microorganisms.
  • Automatic Chemical Dosing for Disinfection:Using an online residual chlorine analyzer and an automatic chemical dosing pump, free residual chlorine is maintained within the safe range of 1.0–3.0 mg/L, 24 hours a day, without interruption.
